+ Project Description
Set high on a hillside with a commanding porch-view of the National Cathedral, this 1907 bungalow lacked a workable kitchen or private space for a family of five. Upstairs, steeply sloping rooves and dormers created irregularly shaped rooms and not quite enough bath space.
The design solution, which required approval by the Cleveland Park Architectural Resources Committee, the local ANC and the Historic Presrvation Review Board, added a rear wing which was sympathetic to, but more than an imitation of, the existing house. The open plan kitchen and family area are surrounded by large windows, and sets on piers with a board-on-board infill. The second floor Master Suite is celebrated with a side-gable that punctuates the long east elevation of the house. The room within soars to the open ceiling above.
The entire mass of the addition plus the existing house create private rear yard, high above the surrounding streets.
